How To Restore Original ROM On Xperia Ray

How To Restore Original ROM On Xperia Ray (11)

Recently we have seen, How To Install Jelly Bean On Xperia Ray. Actually, Jelly bean is not officially provided by sony. By using a custom ROM of jelly bean, we can easily upgrade from ICS to Jelly Bean with the help of the flash tool. I have tested that, and I’m still running on Jelly Bean on my Xperia Ray ST18i device. The ROM is super fast and stable on my device. I’m fully satisfied on Jelly bean Custom ROM.

Due to some minor reasons, some of my readers asked me to publish a tutorial for Restoring Original Xperia Ray Firmware. So, in this article, I’m going to explain How to Downgrade from a Custom ROM to Xperia Ray Stock Firmware.

Note: This tutorial will only work on bootloader unlocked Xperia devices.

Steps Taken Before Restoring Original Xperia Ray Firmware

  • Backup your contacts to sd card or to your Google account.
  • If needed, backup your messages, call history etc.
  • If needed, backup your apps and app data using Titanium Backup App.
  • Please be aware, all of your phone memory data will be erased. But, your SD card data will be kept untouched.
  • Make sure that your device is charged by at least of 90%.

Congratulations! Now your Xperia ray device is restored to the original firmware and the bootloader is locked.

Note: By default, Sony only allow you to install “Xperia Ray Ginger Bread 2.3.4 (Build 4.0.2.A.0.62)” via Sony Xperia Flash Tool. If you need to upgrade from Ginger Bread to Ice Cream Sandwich, please follow the below steps.

  2. What would happen if you just “repair” it using PC Companion?

    1. Hi

Repairing using PC companion is not possible for custom rom. Because, PC companion will check initially for the bootloader unlock status and Stock ROM version. So, it is not possible to repair (I have tried that)

      1. In that case, after following the procedure in this guide, one can “repair” using PC Companion in future, if required, right?

        1. Yes, you are right.

  3. whether the bootloader really locked automatically as before unlock by sony official method? this way will restore the original bootloader?

Therefore i’m following your instruction to restore back to GB stock rom. It’s successfully updated but it cannot boot, stop at “Sony Ericsson” What shall i do?

    Many Thanks

  14. Hello Akhil K A! How are you? i just follow your instruction to Hash to manually update to ICS by following the instruction on how to flash the custom kernel.
But when i followed it i just flash the .img files so my phone now is not working its just open and i see a PACROM logo..

    What will i do?

  16. Hi. Akhil.

You have a very very good site. This site really really help me to costumize my Xperia ray. I’ve just restore my original ROM on my device and its working. thank you very much of your tutorial.

    May God bless you. 🙂

  17. Akhil,
Greetings, Thank you for all the good work you’ve been doing to help us especially non-techie types.
I wonder if you could help me with some idiot proof advice and instructions please.
    So here’s the thing:

I recently rooted my Sony Xperia Ray st18i using Kingo recently. My main reason for this was to get rid of all unnecessary bloat ware. The phone rooted, but I found that I could not get into google play. Nothing could be updated. I accidentally un-installed google play and tried re-installing it, but kept getting error messages (Sorry! The application browser (Process has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again).
I tried a factory reset, but that proved fruitless. I have now lost the ability to update anything. The phone works fine for receiving calls and taking pictures, connecting to the internet and receiving email, but that’s about it. I know it’s an old phone, but I love it. It’s the perfect size and has a decent camera. Besides, I cannot afford a new phone. Grateful for any help and advice please.

    The “about phone” section reads:

    Model Number

    Android version

    Baseband version

    Kernal Version

    Build Number

    Kind regards
    Annesh Ramklown

  18. still waiting for your reply. Grateful for your help

  19. Hi Akhil,

just to let people know, as I was also having these problem:

I’ve locked de bootloader (it was still unlocked after your instructions to restore) and connected the phone to pc companion to upgrade, it finally worked! 4.0.4 installed.

Thanks for the instructions to restore.

  20. The problem:

error message when I upgrade GB to ICS. Here you are detail –
“The Phone tablet contain modified software that cannot be updated.”

    1. Hi.

You need to re-lock the boot loader. Read the post carefully. You can fix this issue easily by locking the bootloader.

  21. Hi Akhil,
Hope you fine… I have restore my xperia ray from KITKAT to GB , but unable to update with the error Sony update engine failure (error 2003) …
If it is resolved by re-lock bootloader so please tell us the steps or tool from which we can easily re-lock.

    Thank you !!!

  22. Thanks for providing so much useful information. I’ve used it to root my xperia ray and instal kitkat. I don’t really like it though and would like to go back. Now I need help.

My bootloader wasn’t unlockable the sony way, so I used a service from wotanserver. It unlocked and I was able to root install kitkat.

But now, the Emma software gives a message that “this phone is locked” and will not allow me to restore it. Am I missing some step? Do you have any ideas? I’ve used the wotanserver service again and it shows a success message after unlocking.
